Meet Our Staff – Kim Engleman
When did you decide this was what you wanted to do with your life? What primarily drove that decision?
I have an art background, but I’ve always been a people person. Through my experience teaching and working with children, I realized that I had a gift for being a good listener and really enjoyed helping others. It feels good knowing you’ve made a difference in someone’s life through what you do.
How did you end up becoming an employee with River City?
I’m not sure how to answer this since I have strong personal ties to River City, although working with family is a beautiful thing. I strongly believe in River City’s philosophy and mission and enjoy working with the staff and clients. I am alson grateful for the various opportunities within the company to grow and learn.
If you could pick any need in Richmond to have an immediate and dramatic impact upon, what would it be and why?
Our public schools, they need us. They need our time, knowledge, encouragement, and support. If we can make a difference early in life, then we can potentially change the course of a life.
What tips would you give to someone who wants to select social work as their career path?
You have to love people and have a real passion for helping others and wanting to impact and improve the lives of others. Patience, compassion, open-mindedness, boundaries, flexibility, and self-care are important traits.
What tips would you give someone outside of the field of social work who wants to make a positive impact on their immediate community?
Get involved with a community project, like a community garden. Volunteer in your local school or assisted living facility. Give back. Tutor. Mentor. Support local businesses in your neighborhood and shop at your local farmer’s market.
Do you have any inspirational quotes that motivate you in what you do?
The Serenity Prayer.
